Apple Maps VS Google Maps

One of the most anticipated aspects of the new iPhone iOS 6 is the new Maps format. Abandoning the use of Google Maps – which has been available on and since the very first iPhone, Apple has announced that it has created and integrated its own version of Maps for the latest iPhone iOS 6.

After noting the fact that both Google Maps and Apple’s new version have many similarities, we decided to square both of them off against each other to find out which format, Google Maps or Apple’s new Maps, do it better.

An exciting aspect of Apple’s version of maps, which Google Maps lack are the constant updated reports on the movement of traffic, allowing you to better map out your journey to avoid a delayed time of arrival. This ability to avoid traffic build up, in addition to the assistance of Siri, will help you get to your destination on time, if not earlier.

In addition, the Apple version maps offers turn-by-turn navigation and directions to the iPhone, however, this features does take away one feature that many public transport users find useful – public transport directions. Currently, Apple Maps does not have public transportation directions built in. And whilst this may certainly change in the future, for now, Google Maps is ahead of the game when it comes to this feature.

As previously touched on, Siri, the personal voice assistant integrated in to the new Mac Mini, gives Apple’s maps a leg up on Google Maps. Siri provides the user with information regarding directions to a location, and alternative routes to take in case of traffic build up. Whilst both Google Maps and Apple Maps allow you to look up a particular location, such as a hotel or a restaurant, only Apple’s format integrates inYelp information in to searches, which allows you to see a location’s ratings and reviews.

Both Google Maps and the new Apple Maps will offer a flyover component, allowing the user to get a birds-eye view of an area.

Because both haven’t yet been released, a comparison can’t yet be made, however, as Apple have stated, their maps will be vector based rather than bitmap based, allowing for smoother graphics and faster loading of images. In addition, Apple has acquired three mapping countries in the past three years, of which two of them specialize in the creation of 3D maps. A final assessment of comparison between Apple’s new maps and Google Maps can’t accurately be made until the release of the new iOS 6, but it can safely be said that Google Maps has some fierce competition ahead.
