ASC 315 – Summer 2017 Page 1 of 2 ASC 315 Project DUE: Sunday, July 30, 2017 by 11:59 pm Submit via blackboard instructions. This is an individual project. It is worth 110 points. Your work must be clear and neat. You must document your resources (where appropriate) when answering the parts of the project. This is a requirement as part of the points given in this project. Part 1: Everyday Metric – In your world (15 pts) Two systems of weights and measure exist side by side in the United States today, the US customary system and the SI system (generally referred to as the metric system). The United States is the only major country not presently using the metric system solely as the unit of measures (Angel, 2013). Describe three ways that you use metric units from the metric system (SI system, NOT the US system) in your everyday life. Part 2: The Importance of Geometry (60 pts) Geometry plays a very important role in the design of objects, structures, planning, etc. The list is endless. This part of the project requires searching the internet for specific examples that involve geometry (detailed below). Your response should be approximately 1 page (double-spaced is fine but document resources on separate page). Part 2a. Search the Internet for an article/example of a real-life application of geometry was a critical element to the success of the object, structure, application, design etc. Provide a DETAILED written description of the application of geometry and why it was it critical to the success. Document your source on where you obtained your example and information. Part 2b. Search the Internet for an article/example of a real-life application of geometry was a critical element to the failure of the object, structure, application, design etc. Provide a DETAILED written description of the application of geometry and why it was critical to the failure. Document your source on where you obtained your example and information. Part 3: Number Representation – Fact or Fiction (35 pts) Below is a picture explaining a misleading situation that we do not necessarily think of when buying food. Food labeling can be quite confusing. Per the US FDA website, food labeling is required for most prepared foods, such as breads, cereals, canned and frozen foods, snacks, desserts, drinks, etc. ASC 315 – Summer 2017 Page 2 of 2 This part of the project, if you choose to do so, requires you to search the food isles of a grocery store or your own pantry to find a product label (other than soup examples since using it below as an example) that represents a misleading information. This will take some research and time in the grocery store to find the product label to complete this part of the project. Now what to do with this label once you have found it. Part 3 Write-Up: i. Include a proper description of the product: Name, brand, grocery store location, and a picture of the label. ii. Show calculations of the discrepancy. iii. Write a paragraph discussing your example. Include why the labeling health “claim” is valid under the FDA rules. DOCUMENT YOUR RESOURCES USED IN ANSWERING THE QUESTIONS.
