As defined by the United States Office of Personnel Management (OPM), Telecommuting, remote work, or telework is a work arrangement in which employees do not commute to a central place of work. A person who telecommutes is known as a "telecommuter", "teleworker", and sometimes as a "home-sourced," or "work-at-home" employee. Many telecommuters work from home, while others, sometimes called "nomad workers", use mobile telecommunications technology to work from coffee shops or other locations. At this time, about 20 percent of non-agricultural workers work in the ‘telecommuting’ mode worldwide. The proportion of workers in the U.S. who are classified as telecommuters is at least as high as the global proportion. It would not surprise anyone if a number of class members have worked in the telecommuting mode.
The concept of telecommuting was non-existent until the Internet matured as the infrastructure for the Web, and advances in wired and wireless telecommunication technology made it feasible to have secure high speed communication between a worker’s location and her/his employer’s offices/facilities.
Please carry out research to identify the pros and cons of telecommuting. The issues involved fall into two sectors; (i) technological, and (ii) productivity/effectiveness of the telecommuter in the context of her/his work responsibilities. After conducting this research, please answer the following question in sufficient detail:
Would you like to have a job for which you ‘telecommute’ instead of ‘going to work’?
Please explain the rationale for your answer, and also the rationale for the opposite response to this question
