Writing Assignment

Throughout this course, we will be thinking about the dynamics of intimate relationships, and learning what scientific research on intimate relationships has to teach us.  But science is not the only way to learn truths about relationships.  Although the science of relationships is relatively new, intimacy has been a theme in biographies, novels, and nonfiction for centuries.  The pioneering marital researcher Neil Jacobson suggested that scientific research has yet to catch up to the wisdom about relationships contained in the best novels.

For this writing assignment, I am asking you to put Jacobson’s claim to the test.  The goal of the assignment is to apply what we have been learning in this course toward understanding relationships as described in one of the films above, which depict various aspects of sexuality and intimacy.

Your first task for this assignment is to select one of the above movies and:  WATCH THE MOVIE. Then, once you have watched the movie, write a paper in which you address the following topics.  Please use the exact four headings given below as the headings in your paper in the order they are given.

I.  Description:  In two to three paragraphs, describe the intimate relationship(s)depicted in the movie. How do they meet?  What is the basis of their attraction?  What kind of people are they and what lives do they lead? What were some of your personal reactions to the main characters as you watched the movie?Use details from the movie but do not plagiarize. Use YOUR OWN WORDS to describe the characters and utilize quotes if including actual words from the movie. This description is worth 5 points.

II.  What forces impact the intimacy issues depicted in the movie?  In this section of the paper, you are being asked to draw from theories we have studied in this course to identify and discuss the forces that shape the nature of the intimate relationship(s), their triumphs as well as the problems they face.  Identify as many as you can, referring to details in the story and keeping in mind the specific theoretical perspectives described in Chapter 3 of the textbook, as well as the other concepts and processes we have discussed throughout this course. You will be graded on:  1) the breadth of material you have integrated from the textbook and the story into your answer, 2) how clearly and thoughtfully you have discussed howtextbook theories and concepts apply to the story. This analysis is worth 10 points.

You will also receive up to 5 points for proper formatting, grammar, and spelling.

Your paper should be no longer than 5 double-spaced single-sided typed pages of standard size. Additional pages will not be read. Please use one-inch margins and Times New Roman font set at 12 point. Do not compress your font or your line spacing. Do not put a cover page on your paper. There is no need for page numbers. Be sure to put your name and student ID on your paper. The assignment is worth 20 points. It is DUE by 4 PM on 11/14/16 as indicated on the syllabus. Do not plagiarize, and be sure to indicate the source of all those ideas in your paper that are not your original ideas. Extensions will not be granted for this assignment under any circumstances, and late papers will not be accepted. All papers must be submitted electronically via TurnItIn.com; hard copies will not be accepted. It is your responsibility to submit your paper on time. If you plan to be out of town or are otherwise unable to upload your paper, submit it early.
