The standars of practice are determined by 'what' and 'how'(Creasia & Friberg,2010).This means what a nurse does and how they do it.These standards of practice are developed by professional bodies and educational institutions which are regulated by a State's Board of Nursing (BON).The first step therefore will be to check if the specific procedure falls under the nurse's scope of practice  as outlined by the state's BON.All this can be obtained by browsing through the State's BON website.

 Nurse's competency and knowledge-American Nurses asscociation(ANA) code of ethics simply states that nurses are accountable for all that they do irrespective of what the physicians, hospitals or other health care organizations ask of them.(ANA code of Ehtics ,2001).Its therefore important to assess the nurses competent and also  their level of knowledge in carrying out the specific procedure. This sometimes is determined by  their educational levels and years of experience.I would have a an educational forum to check their  knowledge and a skills lab for the competency levels. Make use of the nurses who exhibits knowledge of the procedure to teach others as they will feel a part of the new venture and this  will help with a smooth introduction of the procedure to the hospital.After that  work together with the physicians and the nurses to  develop policies,competencies.

  After developing the policies and competencies for the procedure, I would ensure skills labs are continued to ensure all the health care professionals are competent.What I have learnt through my experience is that repetition helps.Encourage skills checks ,positive reinforcements as  this creates a positive attitude towards the new procedure. Make sure all the literature and any new materials, equipment is made available to all nurses and physicians.
