Development of nursing standards of practice is a systematic process which involves the American Nurses Association, a professional body fully committed to promote the application of nursing standards in the practice (Hickey & Brosnan, 2012).  The process of developing these nursing standards commences with the appointment of a committee comprising of representatives of different nursing organizations including academic, administrative and clinical experts who assess the need for a certain nursing standard which doesn’t exist in the prevailing standards framework (Hickey & Brosnan, 2012).  From here, the standard is defined as well as differentiated from the existing standards.

The proposed standard is discussed to ensure that it complies with the established Federal government initiatives regarding the nursing profession (In Hannah et al.,2015).  It is after this point where the committee comes up with a draft proposal which is presented to the governing body, the American Nurses Association.  The governing body goes through the draft and makes the necessary recommendations, if any, to the committee for inclusion.  After this is done the governing body endorses the standard and communicates to the various stakeholders.  The development of a nursing standard of practice dictates involvement of all the stakeholders in the profession who include the government, the nursing professional bodies as well as the general public (In Hannah et al.,2015). In inclusion of all these stakeholders ensures that the nursing standards are well balanced.
