Course Goals

• Develop effective sentence, paragraph, and essay writing.
• Write essays in a variety of rhetorical modes.

Revisit  your past experience and write a brief memoir about an incident that significantly affected your life. Be sure that the event has a dramatic impact that you can illustrate with a climactic point in the narrative. Remember the value of dialogue and of pausing the pace of events to include selected descriptive, sensory details. Consider using flashback, flash-forward, or other narrative devices. Finally, be sure that your memoir has a point that your readers understand. Here are some general suggestions for the main idea and/ or turning point in your memoir: 

• a change in your view of a person, place, or thing
• an unexpected turn of events
• a specific job or educational experience
• a specific illustration of happy or unhappy times in your family
• a specific incident that turned the page in a friend's life
• an incidence of your being unjustly treated
• an occurrence that caused you regret
• an epiphany, where you realized or learned something new
• a time that you saw or displayed courage
• a memorable sports experience

Length of final draft = 3-4 double-spaced pages. Font size = 10-12 point. No decorative typefaces, please.
The purpose of this writing assignment is to help writers give meaning to their personal experience through communicating a dramatic, significant, focused event.
