Psychoanalytic Criticism of The Bluest Eye

In “The Bluest Eye” Morrison examines the damaging psychological effects of racism by exploring internalized racism among the African American community.

The Breedloves internalized racism contributes to their collective feelings of ugliness and worthlessness. They have come to accept their ugliness without question and live their life according to this perception. Their ugliness is not innate but instead a result of social constructs. Upon observing the Breedloves people “wondered why they were so ugly; you looked closely and could not find the source”(39). Their ugliness is not even a result of particular features but instead comes from a mysterious source. Their ugliness “came from conviction, their conviction. It was as though some mysterious all-knowing master had given each one a cloak of ugliness to wear, and they had each accepted it without question”(39). The ugliness of the Breedloves is described as something that has been assigned to them. The ugliness being compared to a “cloak” gives it a sense of separation from the Breedloves themselves. Ugliness is defined as a tangible object as opposed to an abstract concept. The fact that it is something they “wear”, emphasizes their complicity and inability to challenge this label. The ugliness is “given” to them by “some mysterious all-knowing master”, which is the racialized society they live in. The power structures that make it so blackness is essentially ugly are described as “all-knowing” and “mysterious” thus showing the complexity and psychological workings of white standards of beauty and white supremacy.
