statistic and critical values

DQ 7 Objective: You are asked to find one article in the popular press (such as a magazine or online article… MUST BE article, not something from statistics textbook)  where a hypothesis test is described and used to draw a conclusion.

If you can, it is best to find one that is testing a parameter this class has covered in the last module or this module, so you are more familiar/comfortable evaluating the test (many fields of study use hypothesis testing, but it must be an article, not just a website explaining the “how to” of doing a test.  (Common fields are : Medical, Psychology, Economics, etc.).  The age of the article is not important.

AVOID: articles that are educational based material (they are not articles) or ones that only give descriptive statistics.  YOU NEED ONE THAT ACTUALLY has done hypothesis testing and given those results in the article.. Including with some statement of the NULL and either test statistic and/or p-value given as well in article.

ARTICLES that DO NOT FIT the requirement, will be given ZERO credit, so you are welcome to email your instructor to get confirmation that your article fits, as long as you do it ahead of the initial posting due/date and time, allowing time for interaction/feedback from instructor.

  • Part 1) Give the name of the article and brief summary of the variable being tested with a few short sentences.  Also state either the URL of the article as your source OR if it is a hard copy article, scan it in and attach to your post with full citation of its source. (If you miss giving either, correct with new post right away , because any post without this support will get a zero grade.)
  • Part 2) Describe how the test was conducted.  How were the data collected (or can you not tell this from the article?)  Are the data the result of an observational study or experimental study?
  • Part 3) From the article, what is the the Null and Alternative hypothesis (in sentence form is fine) for this test?.
  • Part 4) What is the resulting p-value given*?  Compare (in a sentence) the p-value to alpha level (if alpha is not stated, use alpha of 0.05) and give the resulting decision (for us , a step four in our five step hypothesis test process we learned in this unit and previous unit on hypothesis testing).   If it does not give a p-value and/or does not give a test statistic, you should question yourself on whether you have an article that fits this requirement.
  • [*II they do not give the p-value, but give a test statistic and critical values, then you will have to calculate the p-value.  Contact the instructor for help!]
  • Part 5) What is the stated conclusion (from the article) of the test?
  • CAUTION: Now, it must be said that about 50% of the students do not pick an article that uses hypothesis testing over the semesters this DQ has been given.  SO be careful and seek help prior to posting to be sure you have picked onethat does indeed use hypothesis testing on data to support a conclusion in an article (not from textbook).
