Guidelines & Expectations for Seminar Participants
Verbal Contribution: 30 / Question responses: 45
1. You must arrive to class ON TIME with your answers in hard copy.
2. Contribute to the conversation AT LEAST THREE TIMES to receive full credit.
3. Stick to the point currently under discussion; take notes about ideas you would like to return to & bring them up before the seminar ends.
4. Listen carefully and respectfully to the ideas of your fellow learners.
5. Take turns speaking. Do not dominate the discussion.
6. If you do not understand a fellow learner’s perspective please ask them (use their name) for clarification (be curious!). Begin by paraphrasing …“What I heard you say, Xavier, is that you find Tom to be an individual whose perspective is a byproduct of his environment …”
7. Address the person to whom you are speaking – talk to each other, not to me.
Whenever possible do your absolute best to connect your responses to that of a fellow learner. Acknowledge first; articulate second.
Use your notes from the movie and chapter 9 (and others) to thoughtfully respond to the following questions.
1) Summarize your reaction to this film in a four sentence poem, rhyming or non-rhyming. To get the points for this question you MUST write a poem.
2)How does this film reinforce or perpetuate gender norms and stereotypes (on a romantic interpersonal level, but also looking at the larger social context)?
3) How does this film challenge gender norms and stereotypes (romantic and otherwise)?
4) What is the significance of the non-linear format of this film? Can you connect this formatting choice to any terms or concepts we have discussed thus far in the quarter?
5) Do films/media/music influence how we define love/marriage? In what way? Offer a specific example from your own life.
6) Trace the path of relation formation as you see it played out in Tom and Summer’s relationship (pgs. 287-291). Define each stage in a single sentence using YOUR OWN WORDSand provide a single sentence description of when that stage occurs in the film, or cite the day #. Are there any stages that seem to be skipped entirely?
