“Nursing is the protection, promotion, and optimization of health and abilities, prevention of illness and injury, alleviation of suffering through the diagnosis and treatment of human response, and advocacy in the care of individuals, families, communities, and populations” (American Nurses Association website, 2015). This definition addresses how each patient should be treated as an individual and not grouped together. Each patient has their own way to be cared for and nursed back to health.  For example, just because one medication worked for the patient in room 116, it doesn’t mean you can use it for patient in room 120 because that patient could be allergic to it. Nursing should promote good health, with that being said most hospitals now are completely smoke free. Metaparadigm uses four major components; person, health, environment and nursing. The definition of nursing and metaparadigm are common in the sense that they share the same values in protecting the patient and doing what’s right for them. Nursing isn’t just about clocking in and passing meds.  It’s about caring and having compassion for patients even when you may have something personal going on in your life. As a nurse I spend a good portion of my day just listening to patients and to their parents talk about concerns and questions they have, and as their nurse I am there to educate them and get them the information and answers they deserve.
