Intervention change plan of Marquette University

The Marquette University, an institution that serves students from diverse backgrounds, denominations provides varied courses to its learners. As a recognized institution that offers innovative and critical thinking skills to its learners, it has attracted many students from all over the world. In its investigations to assess its sustainability and the development of a strategic plan, the committee entrusted with the responsibility came across many issues that needed to be addressed. It the issues would not be addressed, then, it will have adverse effects on its students as well as general management. In fact, this will be, irrespective of the fact that the number of the students in the institution is anticipated to grow drastically within five years. Some of the issues that have been identified in the scan are critical, and it is necessary to concentrate on them. Based on the fact that the University has its campuses abroad, many students may be impacted across the globe. In this view, it is important to develop and intervention plan that will be critical to resolving the issues before they develop. To do so, Ely's model will be utilized to demonstrate how the issues should be solved.

Ely’s model focuses on the factors facilitate innovation in the environment. The theorist has provided eight factors that are critical to change in an atmosphere and argues that the conditions are pivotal in creating the most favorable environment for the successful running and adoption of technological innovations (Bajaban, 2012). From this perspective, the model will be appropriate for helping the Marquette University to develop the intervention plan.

The first condition that Ely provides is dissatisfaction with the status quo. The term is used to imply the people's perception concerning change. For example, individuals in an organization may be dissatisfied with the methods, products, or programs. In this context, it is important to gain some insights regarding the cause of the dissatisfaction. The Marquette University does not cater for all aspects of learning making learners dissatisfied. For example, aspects of social activities are not addressed well and may that make students feel that they not developed age holistically. In this context, it is suggested that the activities, such as festivals, sports, and a language center where learners can learn diversity should be availed to the learners. In fact, the increasing number of students from various origins implies that the university should advocate tolerance. Based on the fact that the cause of the dissatisfaction can be attributed to diversity, the institution should sensitize all the stakeholders to understand the significance of peaceful co-existence. Another source of the dissatisfaction is evident staff. According to Bajaban (2012), working environment influences employees' satisfaction. Therefore, the institution should provide a favorable environment for the employees and students. Security problems have also been issues of concern in the university by parents and students; indicating that it should come up with strategies to ensuring that learners are secure.

Ely’s second condition discusses sufficient knowledge and skills. For an implementation process to succeed, they must have adequate information and skills to perform tasks. Akwetey (2011) supports Ely's thought and say that sufficient knowledge is critical, especially when specialization is needed. The problem of inadequate knowledge is also found in the university. The firm leaders' decisions are limited. The issue results from insufficient information that deals with future happenings in aspects, such as politics, economy, as well as governance. As Ely says, no progress can be realized without relevant information. Since the management is the one that is entrusted with the responsibility of ensuring that everything runs smoothly, it is important to avail the required information to the leaders. It is important to state that informed decisions are crucial to implementing a program. In this view, if it is not provided to them, they may end up impacting the functioning of the institution negatively. Moreover, working learners should also be equipped with the relevant skills and knowledge that provide practical skills to needed in doing their individual jobs. Nevertheless, other learners should be equipped sufficiently to meet the employer's requirements in the bazaar.

Availability of resources is another element that Ely identified as a critical condition. In this context, the university cannot handle the requirements of the learners if resources are not enough. It is important to say that certain skills require particular resources. According to Maki (2012), resources are central to realizing real performance outcomes. For example, a learning center is essential in promoting education because the university is comprised of diverse students. If a learning center will be made available, then, learning will improve their social skills for the reason that they will acquire information regarding different cultures. Another vital resource that should be made accessible is the technology. In the contemporary society, technology is employed in all aspects of life to promote efficiency and effectiveness. For example, the use of the internet will be a critical means of communicating instruction to the learners and improve the flexibility of learning. There is a need to improve infrastructure because the ability to recruits is affected by a protected research time. There should be adequate research space as well as competitive research packages (Strategic Plan Coordinating Committee, 2013, p. 13). It is important to state that more funding is required from the federal government, sponsors, and the University itself. Evidently, no success can be achieved with enough money. Money is needed to hire the staff, to create an enabling environment, and for buying other resources in the school. It will be in vain if funds are inadequate because most of the activities would be paralyzed.

                Ely discusses the crucial role played by time. Any innovation requires time and without it, other conditions may be difficult to satisfy. The university requires time to learn from other institutions of higher learning what they do to mitigate some of the issues that they are facing. Additionally, the management should devote some time and reflect on what they have achieved to form the basis of innovation. Moreover, the institution should take opportunity of any obtainable time, for example, weekends and holidays to help the leaner graduate. Besides, it should not limit the courses a learner t should learn for a given session. Since time may not be adequate, it will be vital for the organization to utilize social media platforms to ensure that all learners obtain the required knowledge. The management and the staff should encourage accelerated courses because it is essential to working students.

 The use of incentives is the other thing that Ely advocates. The author holds that there is a need to encourage people in their performance. Two types of stimuli have been identified, which include intrinsic and extrinsic motivation. They are crucial to realizing exceptional results in a firm. In the context of this institution, motivation can play an essential role in attracting students and the staff. The management should provide encouragement the staff to be driven by the desire to work. Additionally, they should use praise to recognize the performance of its employees. As a result, they will feel appreciated. Regarding extrinsic motivation, it is vital for the management to provide attractive salaries and research packages to encourage lectures to perform their tasks. 

 Participation is imperative to making informed decisions as Ely says. All the stakeholders in the institution should be encouraged to participate in the decision-making process. There should be effective communication between them to promote the generation of ideas. In fact, effective communication enables the management to solve issues amicably. In this view, the learners can be allowed to participate in making decisions that affect them. Some activities can be of great significance if students are engaged. For example, through effective communication, they can be requested to take some of the administrative jobs to raise money that would be used by disadvantaged learners. It is also recommended that all students should be involved in more than two high-impact educational practices (Strategic Plan Coordinating Committee, 2013, p. 16). More faculty involvement is also required by the university.

 Ely has identified commitment as a condition for implementing change and argues that people should devote their time and effort to execute the plan. From this perspective, the Marquette University management, staff, and students should be dedicated to the completion of tasks. Specifically, the management should devote its time to make sure that all the activities in the institution are conducted in the right manners. Concerning the staff, they should spend their time doing research to obtain the most current information to the learners. Learners should also be dedicated to the completion of tasks they will be given by their lectures. Leadership is the last condition that Ely offers. According to the writer, leaders' expectations and devotion have significant impacts in many aspects. The availability of practical support through the process has been included in the leadership. In this context, the university should choose the most efficient leadership and equip them with the necessary materials for their work. The administration should advocate more grants for needy students because most of them are affected by their economic statuses. Men and women should be included in the leadership because all of them are equal, and they equally contribute to the development of school (Van Tiem, Moseley & Dessinger, 2012). Leadership skills should be taught to learners and the university staff as part of professional development.

                Therefore, the intervention change plan for the Marquette University is comprised several activities. Many factors have been considered. Grounded in the fact that the institution admits diverse students, it is necessary to be cautious when implementing the plan. For effective intervention, Ely’s model has been used and various strategies suggested. The eight conditions provided by Ely have been extensively discussed. Most of the aspects that influence Marquette University can be handled. However, it requires a combined effort of all the stakeholders.
