Car Wheel Project,

Can you please help me on this

Unit 5 Portfolio
Car Wheel Project

Part 1

Answer the following questions:

  1. How do you find the area of a circle?
  2. How do you find the circumference of a circle?
  3. What information do you need in order to find the area or circumference of a circle?
  4. To determine the number of full rotations your tires complete before you need to switch the front and back tires, will you be working with area or circumference?

Part 2

You will turn in the results of this activity for your assessment for this lesson.

  1. Measure the circumference of the tires of three different vehicles. Vehicles can include cars, bikes, scooters, tractors, etc.
  2. Determine the number of full rotations the tires of each of the vehicles will complete in 10,000 miles.
  3. Choose one of the vehicles and keep track of how far you travel in that vehicle for a week. Calculate the average daily number of rotations made by the tires.
  4. Use your data to predict when you will need to switch the front and back tires.

Suggested tables for Part 2:

Rotations Basis for Tire Changes

VEHICLES

RADIUS OF A WHEEL IN INCHES

RADIUS OF A WHEEL IN FEET

1 ROTATION MEANS A DISTANCE OF (CIRCUMFERENCE)

HOW MANY FEET IN A MILE?

HOW MANY ROTATIONS IN ONE MILE?

NUMBER OF ROTATIONS TIMES 10,000:

HOW MANY WEEKS TO REACH 10,000 MILES?

Part 3

Reflect on how different tire sizes would change your answer. What would happen to the number of rotations if the circumference of the tires were increased by 20%? What would happen to the number of rotations if the circumference of the tires were decreased by 20%?
