This part of the final exam presents you with two essay topics. You are to write an essay of roughly two to three pages in length on each of the two topics described below. Please submit your two essays as a single MS Word file 

 

 

Topic 1: The Data Mining Process

Describe the stages of the data mining process. What are they and what happens at each stage?   Indicate the major decisions that the data miner must make at each stage. Does the data mining process follow a linear order of stages, but is the process more iterative in nature? Please give examples where applicable. You might begin by thinking about the stages that you went through in order to complete your Course Project.

 

Topic 2: Data Mining Non-Business Application Areas

We have seen many examples of data mining methods being applied to business problems. But data mining methods are not only applicable to business problems.  You are to research and cite at least three non-business areas where data mining might be fruitfully applied. Briefly describe each area including examples. Include your references.
