HW Help Overview!

HW Help Overview!

This assignment covers material from chapters 4, 5 and 6: Measures of Central Tendency; Measures of Dispersion; Probability Distributions.

Read the two listed articles and answer the associated questions. Please answer each question with complete sentences. Keep Short Answers!

Article 1: Button, D. M., & Worthen, M. G. (2014). General Strain Theory for LGBQ and SSB Youth The Importance of Intersectionality in the Future of Feminist Criminology. Feminist Criminology, 9(4), 270-297.

The authors present the means and standard deviations for all of the key variables in tables 2-5. Ignoring the t-tests (we do not cover the chapter that explains this specific type of t-test in this course---see chapter 10 if interested) and ANOVAS (we do not cover this at all), answer the following questions about the means and standard deviations. When you are asked to "compare," make sure you always include three elements: 1) the values you are comparing, 2) an interpretation of what they mean, and 3) how they differ.

1.    What do standard deviations tell us about variables? Meaning, provide an explanation of standard deviation in your own words.

2.    Compare the means and standard deviations of the victimization scale for males and females in Table 2. What do these numbers tell us about the victimization experiences of each gender?

3.    Compare the means and standard deviations of the poor academic performance scale for males and females in Table 2. What do these numbers tell us about the academic performance of each gender?

4.    Looking at Table 3, which LGBQ of SSB identity group experiences the most victimization, on average?

5.    Looking at both Tables 4 and 5, do lesbians or gay males have higher average victimization scores?

6.    Looking at Table 4, which female identity group has the highest average victimization score?

7.    Looking at Table 5, which male identity group has the highest average victimization score?

8.    Now, simultaneously consider your answers in questions 2, 4-7. What conclusion can you draw based on your answers? In other words, how can we interpret these results as a whole?

Article 2: Donner, C. M., & Jennings, W. G. (2014). Low Self-Control and Police Deviance: Applying Gottfredson and Hirschi's General Theory to Officer Misconduct. Police Quarterly, 17(3), 203-225.

1. What is the main purpose of this article? In other words, how does this article contribute to our understanding of police deviance and why is it important?

Table 1 contains the findings from the first stage of analysis in which the authors provide descriptives for each of the study variables. Use this table to answer questions 2-4.

2.    Which variable has the largest range? What is the range?

3.    Looking at the key independent variable, Low self-control, what is the mean? What is the standard deviation? What is the range? Perform some calculations to determine the range of scores on the low self-control scale in which 95.44% of the scores fall. Hint: remember that about 95% of the scores fall within 2 standard deviations above and below the mean.

4.    In the table, why do some variables have means and standard deviations in the second column while other variables have percents? In other words, why couldn't the authors provide means and standard deviations for all of the study variables?
