Who’s Right?

Who’s Right?

Each of the following questions has been answered by two students, Gilda and Arjun. In each

case, one student’s answer is correct, and the other student’s answer is incorrect.

For each question;

a. State which student’s response is correct.

b. Find, clearly identify, and correct the misconceptions in the incorrect student’s response.

c. Write 2-3 sentences describing the incorrect student’s mistakes and how it should be

corrected.

1-      Write the logarithmic expression as a single logarithm: 777 log log log xyz

Gui:

Log7 x + log7 y – log7 z

= log7 ( x+y) – log7 z

= log7 ((x+y)-z)

Augusto:

Log7 x + log7 y – log7 z

= log7 xy - log7 z

= log7 xy/z

2-      Solve the logarithmic equation log2 4 + log2 x = 6

Gui:

Log2 4 + log2 x = 6

2 + log2 x = 6

Log2 x = 4

2^4 = x

X= 16

Augusto:

Log2 4 + log2 x = 6

2 + log2 x = 6

Log2 x = 4

2^x = 4

X = 2

3-      Use the change of base formula to evaluate the logarithmic expression log3 33  round the answer to the nearest thousandth.

Gui:

Log3 33

= log3/log33

= 0.314

Augusto:

Log3 33

= log33/log3

= 3.183

4-      The problems above describe some of the most common mistakes made when simplifying and evaluating logarithms. Which of these mistakes do you find the easiest to make? Write 4-5 sentences that describe what you feel is the most common type of mistake made. In your response be sure to include the following
