concentration of acid in your new soft drink,

  1. Tired of the same ol’ soft drinks, you invent a new recipe. Your formulation, like many soft drinks, contains phosphoric acid, H3PO4. Curious about the concentration of acid in your new soft drink, you decide to titrate a 25.0-mL sample with 0.206 M NaOH. 19.2 mL of the base is required to reach the endpoint. What is the molarity of phosphoric acid in your formulation?

H3PO4 + NaOH → Na3PO4 + H2O

2.  After suffering through a series of colds, you wonder if your Emergen-C really does contain 1,000 mg vitamin C (ascorbic acid) per packet as advertised. According to some quick calculations, dissolving one packet of Emergen-C in 50.0 mL of water should give an ascorbic acid concentration of 0.114 M. You titrate your 50.0-mL sample with 1.25 M NaOH. It takes 4.54 mL of NaOH to reach the endpoint. Is Emergen-C’s claim of 1,000 mg vitamin C per packet true?

The equation is… HC6H7O6 + NaOH → NaC6H7O6 + H2O

3. Milk of magnesia (MOM, with active ingredient magnesium hydroxide) is a common component of antacids. You are investigating MOM products to find out which company offers the best deal. You’ve narrowed it down to two products: an “original” formula and an “improved” formula. The companies provide the following information:

20.0 mL “original” formula titrated to endpoint with 37.8 mL of 4.35 M HCl

15.0 mL “improved” formula titrated to endpoint with 64.9 mL of 2.85 M HCl

Considering this titration reaction… Mg(OH)2 + HCl → MgCl2 + H2O …

3a what is the molarity of the “original” formula?

3b what is the molarity of the “improved” formula?

3c Is the improved formula actually an improvement in concentration?

4. . Predict the products of the following reaction and determine the mass of calcium chloride that can be produced from 155 mL of 3.50 M HCl (aq). Assume there is sufficient Ca(OH)2 to carry out the neutralization. Give your answer in grams.

HCl (aq) + Ca(OH)2 (aq) =

5. Maalox is a mixture of aluminum hydroxide and magnesium hydroxide, both of which neutralize gastric acid (hydrochloric acid). Predict the products of the following reactions.

Al(OH)3 + HCl =

Mg(OH)2 + HCl =

5a What mass of aluminum hydroxide would be required to neutralize 25 mL of 0.032 M hydrochloric acid? Give your answer in grams.

5b What mass of magnesium hydroxide would be required to neutralize 25 mL of 0.032 M hydrochloric acid? Give your answer in grams.

5c In questions 2a and 2b, two different antacids neutralized the same amount of acid. Which compound is a better antacid? Think about this carefully.
