Valley Metro Light Rail is proposing a 30 – mile “West Valley” extension to run from Downtown Phoenix to west of Buckeye, AZ. The light rail line would closely parallel Interstate 10, with the rail line located either in the existing freeway median or elevated above the freeway.
The light rail line will service western neighborhoods in the city of Phoenix, as well as the cities of Tolleson, Avondale, Goodyear, Buckeye and the surrounding communities. Average daily ridership is expected to be 10,500 passengers/day at launch in 2025. Recently a sample survey was completed with 1,500 residents in the affected zip codes. Below is a summary of the sample survey results:
Zip Code/Community |
Percentage of Respondents Supporting the Light Rail Extension |
85043: Far Western Neighborhoods of Phoenix |
88% |
85035: Inner Western Neighborhoods of Phoenix |
82% |
85323: Tolleson |
68% |
85392: Avondale |
63% |
85338: Goodyear |
74% |
85326: Buckeye |
85% |
You are an outside marketing research analyst hired by Phoenix Valley Metro Light Rail to analyze the above data in support of a more thorough feasibility study being completed on the “West Valley” Light Rail extension. Hint: the sample size “n” is NOT the 1,500 residents.
53.Calculate the mean for the percentage of respondents supporting the light rail extension and write your answer here _________________.
54.Calculate the median for the percentage of respondents supporting the light rail extension and write your answer here _________________. Hint: remember the averaging rule if there is not a clear “middle” value in the data set.
55.What is the range for the percentage of respondents supporting the light rail extension? Specify the lowest value in the range here ____________________ and the highest value in the range here ___________________.
56.Calculate the sample standard deviation for the percentage of respondents supporting the light rail extension and write your answer here ______________________. Here is the standard deviation equation:
57.Calculate the confidence interval for the percentage of respondents supporting the light rail extension. Write your answer here________________________. Assume we want to be 95% confident with the estimate. Therefore, the Z value to ensure that one-half of the distribution from each side of the mean is included is 1.96. To complete this calculation you will need:
· The sample standard deviation value.
· The standard error of the mean value which is calculated as (SAMPLE STANDARD DEVIATION (s)/SQUARE ROOT OF n).
· The Z value.
· The equation to calculate the confidence interval values:
