INSTRUCTIONS
:
As you go about your daily activities, pay attention to your perceptions wh

something seems different,

your journal entries.

Example:
My flight from South Africa to the U.S. had just landed in Atlan
ta’s International Airport. I felt
nervous and excited as I waited to leave the airplane. Other passengers were quickly gathering their
luggage after a long flight.
A black man talked to me with
a thick American accent as we waited. He
asked, “Are you
from Africa?” and wanted to know my African name and what it meant. He said that he
wanted to learn more about his “homeland” after seeing the movie “Roots.” I did not know the movie
“Roots.” Later, when I told him about the college I would be attending
, he said that I would have a
better experience at a “black college.”
I was baffled
by this conversation. I did not understand why an American would call Africa his
“homeland.” I had never heard of the movie “Roots.” I also did not understand why he tho
ught I
should
go to
a “black college.” I thought, “I’ve been going to black schools my entire life, and I don’t want to
have anything to do with them.”
I felt shaken and confused by this interaction.
This black American questioned whether
integrated sc
hools were good for black people. South Africans have fought for integration for a long
time. We seemed to have different understandings of equality and integration in America. He made me
question what I thought I knew about the United States.
