In the first discussion post you will explore the subject of imperialism from the perspective of the colonizer. After reading Rudyard Kipling’s poem, “The White Man’s Burden,” analyze how the poem describes the relationship between the colonizer and the colonized. What is the significance of the title of the poem, “The White Man’s Burden”? Consider who are the white men Kipling is referring to. What are their views of themselves as colonizers and how do they justify these views? You may want to consider how we regard the views expressed in the poem today. Are they racist? What would Edward Said say about Kipling's ideology? Also choose one or more of the literary texts we’ve read this week, either, Conrad, Anand, or Paton, and discuss how the author of that text regards the colonial view expressed by Kipling. Does the author agree with Kipling? If not, how does he differ and why? You may also refer to outside scholarly resources to support your claims.
