Since childhood, everything related to the fundamental truth intrigues me. I wondered what is the meaning of life. I wondered what is the highest good. Someone says that doing philosophy is like chasing an inexistent black cat in a totally dark house. Indeed, I see the peculiar fascination of philosophy as examining the unseen truth. More than that, I see philosophy, or more accurately, to relentlessly seek the truth, a way of life. An unsettled life left me a long-term depression. My mom came to America when I was three years old. My dad was too busy to care for me. My relatives in China brought me up, until when I was twelve, I got the opportunity to come to America to live with my mom. As I coped with the sense of solitude and insecurity with my long-time depression, I grew up to be a brave and passionate spirit to ceaselessly explore not only the fundamental truth of the world, but also the real meaning of my life.

From The Alchemistby Paulo Coelho to Way of the Peaceful Warrior by Dan Millman, I pondered about the nature of everything, ranging from life to materials and to death. When I first came to the U.S. at the age of twelve, I could barely speak, write, or read English. I managed to overcome the language barrier, achieved to be one of the top students in my high school, and enjoyed the rich intellectual resources in America.

In those dark, sleepless nights when I suffered from pains and despair from depression, the pure joy of exploring ethics, metaphysics, aesthetics, and other branches in philosophy was my sole comfort. Through contemplating immortality and self-consciousness via readings such as Professor Duncan Purves’s “The Badness of Death”, I reflect my current situation and found serenity. Never satisfied with the set answer, I learnt from philosophy a spirit to challenge the status quo to always seek the truth.

At UCI, the class Introduction to Philosophy this past winter turned my vague fascination for philosophy into solid passion. Unlike the joy I experienced in personal reading, I enjoyed so much the intellectual stimulation from my peers and professors and aspire to transfer to a place where I can meet minds with equal passions for the exploration of truths and meanings like me.

Depression attacked me now and then from the very beginning of my freshman year. Last April, overwhelmed by the unbearable pressure from my depression, schoolwork, and investment tasks, I took a wrong path of academic dishonesty. When I got dismissed, though I was extremely shameful and regretful of what I did, I was also very angry about the unfair procedures of violation of school policy and the biased member body of the Hearing Panel. I appealed again and again, explaining how I had been taking medications for my depression and how the school counselor had denied my right to present evidence. It was a branch of Chinese philosophy, Buddhism, that gave me the power to find my inner peace. An “Aha” moment fell on me after I rethought the whole thing from the perspective of Buddhism. As in philosophy that answer is not the most important thing but the exploration itself is, life is not about destination but about process.

Philosophy begs forcourage,in a way that I need to question formed judgment, from both others and myself, not fearing the pain in overturning values or the fruitlessness of the exploration. Similarly, challenges from my family and mental health should never knock me down. I picked up my music classes with distinguished musicians. I applied for a volunteer trip to Thailand to follow my passion for community service. After all the difficulties, I am with stronger courage and determination to continue my exploration in philosophy at your school. I am ready to revive my search for the meaning of life and the fundamental truth at your school.
