After you have attended the concert, write a review that is about 600 words, typed, double-spaced, using 12-point font. In this assignment, you will create a strong perspective that is analytical, interpretive, evaluative or a combination of the 3 about the concert, and support that with description of the bodies moving (3 component descriptions) and other evidence to substantiate these strong claims. Remember that the thesis statement should state your perspective in one sentence at the end of the introductory paragraph.

1.  The dancers lie on their stomachs and perform some crisp, sharp presses into the floor with their forearms that cause their heads to suddenly snap up, and place their fists under their chins for the briefest of moments before catching their foreheads in their hands and releasing their heads to slap the floor with those same hands. This section is followed by a languid ripple of the spine where the forearms are parallel to each other right in front of the ribs. After the ripple, the dancers lift their elbows and gently press the palms of their hands into the floor with their faces hovering an inch above the ground."

 

2.  Amelia is particularly compelling in its combination of quickness and stillness. The dance seems to alternate between the two, and the speed with which the female dancer is able to perform the intricate choreography makes the sudden stillness-es that much more startling. The woman's hand flicks and dabs abruptly against the man’s chest while her directions change quickly as he turns her torso, her legs creating angular shapes by bending crisply at the knee. This is contrasted by the broad low lunge she stops in where her arms are raised to the position of an L, her focus down as she tries to see what is in her peripheral vision.

 

Your perspective could compare and contrast two sections of the concert as you did in Lesson 04.  Remember the examples of specific thesis statements from that lesson:

2.  "In the two pieces, "XXXXX" and "YYYYY," presented at Cornish Dance Theater, the choreographers payed particular attention to their use of the stage space to communicate an idea and I was fascinated with their choices because I have always been interested in how the placement of objects in a space affect its mood." 

3.  "Because my family tends to use their hands and gesture a lot when they tell stories, I was particularly compelled by how the emotional story came to life in Dayna Hanson's The Clay Duke through the use of articulate and specific gestures, and this was especially evident in the sections titled "XXXX" and "YYYYY."

One way to approach the format for this paper is as follows:

Paragraph 1 - Set the context for the whole concert and then introduce the two pieces you will discuss in your essay. Your thesis should take a point-of-view or make a claim about specific aspects of the choreography in both pieces.

Paragraph 2 - Discuss the first dance piece. Choose specific moments of choreography that support your thesis. Use 3 component descriptions to help your reader imagine the dance as you saw it.

Paragraph 3 - Discuss the second dance piece. As above, use 3 component descriptions to help your reader envision important moments of choreography.

Paragraph 4 - Tie it all together. Refer to the evidence you have discussed in the body of the paper and explain how your observations support your thesis.
