Persuasion
Week 6 The Written Critique
Instructions
You will observe and critique a live (facetoface) public speech outside of class
delivered by a trained, prominent public speaker during the current session.
In the first paragraph of your critique, you must inform me about the details of the
speech [speaker, date, place, occasion, topic, audience] that you observed and the
method of rhetorical criticism you chose to use in criticizing the speech.
You may use any of the four theories (or any elements of one or more of the
theories) of rhetoric presented to you in the lecture on rhetorical criticism, or you
may use any of the criteria indicated on the critique sheets for the informative,
demonstration, persuasive
belief, or persuasive
action speeches, or you may use
the Strengths, Weaknesses, and Suggestions for Improvement used in oral
critiques, or you may use another method of your own choosing. Precisely
indicate the method you will use: if you choose to use some, but not all elements.
Limit your responsibility by indicating the elements you intend to use.
Please use side headings (underlined) labeling the elements used as you move
through the critique, followed by the text of your critique of that element.
If you are unable to observe a live speech performance, you may observe a
recorded public speech delivered by a trained, prominent public speaker. Or you
may watch any speech with
full video
(not just audio) at
www.americanrhetoric.com
. Click on the Online Speech Bank. You must
establish that the speaker has a national reputation as a public speaker and meet all
other criterion given above.
Please name for file to indicate this assignment, such as Wk6WCSmith. Make
sure that your file format is .doc, .docx, or rtf.
