Listening
Â
Chapter 3 defines listening as "paying close attention to, and making sense of, what we hear." The key to listening is the sense-making process. In order to do this, one has to CHOOSE to be an active listener. Active listening involves concentration and a commitment to sustained/prolonged focus. It's a difficult, energy draining skill-but it's critical to mastering anythin from school work to playing an instrument. In modern times, we have a million forms of distraction that make concentration difficult.
Â
What are some of the distractions (or **interferances**) that you experience in your day to day life when you're trying to concentrate. Be honest! I know facebook and instagram should be on the list!
Â
What are some of the things you do to avoid or minimize distractions when you're trying to actively listen?
Â
Do you think active listening is always necessary? For example, do you have to be an active listener when engaging in Appreciative listening? What about Empathetic listening?

Ethics and Public Speaking
Â
Plagiarism is a huge issue on college campuses across the nation. While global plagiarism (stealing from a single source) isn't as common due to software like turnitin, other forms of plagiarism are extremely common. Sometimes it's intentional (procrastinating and doing your research paper the night before-smh), and sometimes it's not (accidentally forgetting to accurately cite a source). Either way it's considered unethical and usually punished according to the ethical standards of your institution.
Â
Do you struggle with research? Why do you find it difficult? What are some measures you can take to ensure that you avoid plagiarism?
