Scenario

 

You are Ariana Huffington, president and owner of Planet Cycle. You must refuse a request from the North American Bicycle Association (NABA) in Telluride, Colorado. The NABA wants your company to be a major sponsor of the First Annual World Mountain Bike Championship by contributing $30,000. You commend NABA’s efforts to help promote the sport of mountain biking, particularly in regard to encouraging families—some of whom are your customers—to participate. You also appreciate NABA’s efforts to help make ski resorts available to mountain bikers during the summer months.

You want to support the World Mountain Bike Championship, as such races increase interest in mountain biking and help to generate sales for your company. Also, you have supported some bike races in the past, but your contributions have usually been under $500, which helped pay for trophies. However, NABA wants to offer large cash prizes and even pay for the expenses of big-name champions to participate in the event. Your contribution as a major sponsor would help to cover these costs.

You run a small company in Boulder, Colorado, and all of your current profits are being used for research so that your company can keep up with the competition. You are very proud of your newly introduced brake pads and trigger-action shift levers, but these kinds of engineering innovations are costly, and you have already invested the equivalent of what is being requested in research to make mountain bikes safer. You don’t have the funds that NABA wants. However, you are willing to contribute $500 toward trophies or to pay for an advertisement in their program. In addition, you want to set up a booth to demonstrate your new inventions.
