Question:

Analyze the form of “Young Deer” and “Psalm” below.  Both these poems have similar subjects—do the poets treat these subjects in similar ways?  Both poems are also in free verse.  What notable things do you see in the form of each poem?  Do the poets use enjambment?  How is white space used to emphasize certain elements of each poem? Overall, how would you compare these two poems?

YOUNG DEER

That is looks out at us.

from

that thicket, front leg planted

in the dry gold of leaves.

                                              Ears standing up

alerted into fans of listening to what may be

coming.         eyes huge in

that narrow head, mouth tender

Psalm

By  George Oppen

In the small beauty of the forest

The wild deer bedding down—

That they are there!

                              Their eyes

Effortless, the soft lips

Nuzzle and the alien small teeth

Tear at the grass

                              The roots of it

Dangle from their mouths

Scattering earth in the strange woods.

They who are there.

                              Their paths

Nibbled thru the fields, the leaves that shade them

Hang in the distances

Of sun

                              The small nouns

Crying faith

In this in which the wild deer

Startle, and stare out.

Help 82

Here is Laurie Sheck’s poem “Bluefish” below.  Arrange the words in lines you think suit the words.  What overall meaning do you hope to emphasize this way?  Then, compare your poem to the original (handout).  Which one do you like better? Why?
