Question

Ryan the Narrator: Hello! I’m Ryan, and welcome to Triple A Security. Today, let’s look in on Joel, a Security Operations Manager, and Tim, Joel’s subordinate.  For the past few months, Tim, a Security Specialist, has not been performing well. He has missed several crucial deadlines, been caught snoozing at his desk, and surfing the web. Today, Joel has to confront Tim about his performance and correct his poor work. You will be presented with three different interactions, each depicting Joel handling the performance situation differently. Watch carefully. At the conclusion of this module, you will be asked to pick the scenario in which Joel handled the situation most effectively.

Tim: Oh, great. I forgot about our meeting. I better straighten up my desk before Joel comes over to get me.

Joel: Good morning, Tim. Let’s meet in my office. So, how’s it going Tim? I thought we should meet to catch up on a few things.

Tim: Oh, great. I forgot about our meeting. I better straighten up my desk before Joel comes over to get me.

Joel: Good morning, Tim. Let’s meet in my office. So, how’s it going Tim? I thought we should meet to catch up on a few things.

Tim: Oh, great. I forgot about our meeting. I better straighten up my desk before Joel comes over to get me

Joel: Good morning, Tim. Let’s meet in my office. So, how’s it going Tim? I thought we should meet to catch up on a few things.

Tim: Everything is going okay.

Joel: I see. Well, I called you in today to tell you I am pretty disappointed in you right now, Tim. In fact, I'm very upset at your performance over the past few months. I will not tolerate it any more. Anymore slips up in the future, and I will have to let you go.

Tim: But Joel…umm…what did I do wrong?

Tim: Everything is going okay.

Joel: I see. Well, I called you in today to tell you I am pretty disappointed in you right now, Tim. In fact, I'm very upset at your performance over the past few months. I will not tolerate it any more. Anymore slips up in the future, and I will have to let you go.

Tim: But Joel…umm…what did I do wrong?

Tim: Everything is going okay.

Joel:  You should know the answer to that! But, let me fill you in any ways. Over the past few months, I have caught you sleeping at your desk, looking at websites that have no relevance to your job, and to top it all off, you’ve missed two very important deadlines! Does any of this ring a bell?

Tim: Yes. Lately, I haven’t been getting much sleep, and I do recall missing those deadlines. But, I didn’t miss them by much, just a few days.

Joel: You still missed them! Other team members had to scramble to clean up your mess! It was almost a disaster. You need to understand that deadlines are important in this industry! People’s safety is on the line. As for sleeping on the job and looking at recreational websites, that behavior must stop if you wish to be employed here.

Tim: You are right, Joel. I’m sorry. I’ll do better in the future. I appreciate you bringing these concerns to my attention

Joel: Now that we have addressed those issues, I want you to know that I think you have real potential as a security specialist. You are an asset to our team here at Triple A Security. Remember, if you have a problem getting your work done, it's always best to talk with me about it before the deadline. I'm willing to work with you. Please keep on task and stay alert during working hours!

Tim: Okay, thanks Joel. I will from now on, I promise.

Joel: Good. Now, be productive and have a good day!

Ryan the Narrator: So, that was scenario #1. What did you think? Did Joel handle the situation appropriately? What did Joel do correctly? What could he improve? Take a look at scenario #2.

Joel: Well, hello Tim. Interesting website you’re looking at. Please come into my office right now.

Joel:  Your behavior over the past two months has been unacceptable. You’re in a lot of trouble right now. I can’t believe you would waste company time playing on gaming websites. Is this a frequent activity of yours? I should fire you on the spot! Plus, last week, I caught you taking a snooze at your desk. And, remember two weeks ago when you missed the Decoder project deadline? That put us in quite a pickle. I can’t believe how unprofessional you are behaving! It’s appalling. Either it stops or you are out! Do you hear me?

Tim: Yes, sir. I hear you. I'm terribly sorry for my actions.

Joel: Being sorry doesn’t change anything. I want to see results! Are you going to shape up and start acting professionally?

Tim: Yes, sir. It starts right now.

Joel: It better! This is the last time I’m going to bring this to your attention. The next time it will be via a pink slip. I’m going to be keeping a very close eye on you. One more mistake and it’s the unemployment line for you!

Tim: I understand. Thank you for your time.

Joel: Now, get back to work!

Ryan the Narrator: Now that you have seen scenario #2, which do you think is closer to how a manager is supposed to correct poor work? Did Joel handle the situation appropriately this time?  Before you decide, view scenario #3.

Joel: Hello, Tim. We need to discuss your poor work performance. You are being docked 10 points on your performance review this quarter. If you lose any more points, you will be terminated. The behavior and the work quality you have shown are unacceptable.  Over the past few months, you've been caught sleeping on the job, looking at irrelevant websites, and you’ve missed two very important deadlines. Plus, when you finally did turn in your work, the quality was poor. Mitchell had to redo the entire Decoder report. If you want to continue to be employed here, you must clean up your act. It's imperative!

Tim: Yes, Joel. I understand what you are saying. I know I have not been performing well lately.

Joel: I am very upset and angry about your performance. When I hired you two years ago, you were one of my top performers. Now, you’re barely keeping afloat. I am disappointed and I want you to do better.

Tim: You’re right. I want to improve too, can you help me?

Joel: Well, for starters, when you’re having a problem with an assignment, come talk with me about it. Together we can get you back on track. You may also want to get more sleep at night, so you can stay focused on your work. And as for websites, IT has blocked those sites, so you won’t be tempted any longer.

Tim: Okay, thanks for the suggestions.

Joel: Tim, I want you to know that most of the time you do really great work. I value your presence on my team and I want you to do well in the future. You are a good person, but lately your performance has not been satisfactory. That needs to improve. I think with some commitment and hard work, you can be an outstanding contributor again!

Tim: I’m really grateful for a second chance and your faith in me. I promise to be a better employee. You will see results.

Joel: Okay. I'll be watching. Now that that discussion is out of the way, let’s focus on our next project. We can meet about that later. I have to run. Thanks for your time.

Tim: No, thank you!

Ryan the Narrator: Now that you have seen all three scenarios, which do you think is the way a manager is supposed to correct poor work? Did Joel handle the situation appropriately this time? Jot down some reflections and refer to this week’s assignment sheet for the details on this week’s written assignment.

  • Once you view all three scenarios, discuss which scenario did you see Joel properly correcting Tim’s poor work? Why did you pick that scenario?
  • What were Joel’s behaviors? Please give your opinion of how correcting poor work should be taken care of as well as how you would approach correcting a subordinate’s poor work.
  • If you have encountered this type of situation, please relate this in your paper.  This may include your experiences in dealing with difficult people.  You should provide tips on handling difficult situations.  (This is important because security professionals are often in stressful situations that require tact, patience, and understanding.)
  • You need to provide at least three references and at least 4 pages to back up your statements and opinions .
