Infographic Data Visualization Assignment
Infographic Assignment
According to Wikipedia (I'm willing to risk the Wikialien ;-) an Infographic is a "graphic visual representations of information, data or knowledge intended to present complex information quickly and clearly. They can improve cognition by utilizing graphics to enhance the human visual system’s ability to see patterns and trends. The process of creating infographics can be referred to as data visualization, information design, or information architecture." Folks have been creating and using them since the 1600s. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Information_graphics) <---actually, this is a pretty good article, so you should read it, including the links at the bottom :-)
These are the Deliverables:
1. the Infographic itself, covering at least 10 data categories.
2. a 250-500 word explanation for non-technical managers (aka Dilbert's Boss)
3. a short (around 500 words) personal essay reflecting on your experience with your chosen topic and Infographic creation, and relating it to this article about Infographics: ''What Are Infographics and Why Are They Important?" (http://www.instantshift.com/2011/03/25/what-are-infographics-and-why-are-they-important/)
You will share your Infographic and the 250-500 word explanation for managers with the class during the last week of the term.
Look at the Infographic the Pew Research Center's Project for Excellence in Journalism (PEJ) created (http://blog.visual.ly/wp-content/uploads/2012/10/PEJ_12.09.28_tabletNews_web-01.png?547b7b) as part of the Infographic challenge they had last year (http://visual.ly/pej-economist-challenge) that inspired this assignment – it will give you an idea of the scope of an Infographic. They have covered roughly 10 data categories.
Once you have chosen your topic and had it approved, you should write up a one page proposal, outlining important information about it, what points you will cover in your article, and a short list of resources. Share this with the class (Infographic/Wikipedia Project Step #2 Board) for peer feedback.
We are using Kathy Schrock’s Infographic Rubric for grading: https://web.archive.org/web/20130903025254/http://kathyschrock.net/pdf/Schrock_infographic_rubric.pdf Aim for the “Exceeds Expectations” column.
Keep in mind this snippet I found on another teacher’s site: “Information graphics are interesting because they reveal differences.”
