As far as self-defense, preliminary investigations, and weapons training are all very important areas of police work. Preliminary investigation is also important because a police officer is usually the first one on scene especially when a major crime happens.  It is imperative that the first officers to arrive on any crime scene prevent the possibility of contamination or alteration of the crime scene and/or the physical evidence present.

 

I feel that report writing is probable the overall most important part but each of the others are very important when they are needed. The reason report writing is important is that when the fun is over and it has been six months or two years since the call and you are now getting ready to get on the stand and have a defense attorney try and make a fool of you all you have is the report you wrote after the call. I think the best way to prepare is practice and have some examples of good and bad reports for then to review. Also having real life examples for the rookies and allowing them to review reports from seasoned officers will help them to prepare for the street. I am not totally sure that all the training in the world can make a new officer ready but I do know that one time on the stand with a poor report and it brings the importance of a good report to the light. As long as what is listed is actually being covered I think they are preparing the rookies for the street. The issue from my academy was that we had times when instructors were sick or called out and we never got back to covering the topics missed.

Academy Training Orison you are correct when you say report writing Report writing is important in police work. Report writing is one of the foremost impressions a office makes on his/or her commanding officers, judges and lawyers. Another good point you made was to have good and bad reports to review. A poorly written document will cause an  incorrect description of competence level (Importance of Professional, 2014). Also if well written a police officer will gain respect from there commanding officer. Is there a report you do not like writing? How long did it take you to learn to write a report? How does a bad report affect court cases? You also mentioned self-defense, preliminary investigations, and weapons training are all very important.
