guidelines for the Informative Speech
This speech has to be in this OUTLINE FORMAT. NOT AN ESSAY. ITS A SIMPLE SHORT SPEECH .OUT LINE SHOULD BE IN SENTENCES AND MAKE SENSE. use the outline below to create the speech.
The Informative Speech: For this assignment, you want to convey information in an interesting way that makes the audience want to listen and also makes them retain the information you give them. The topic will be of your choosing: a speech about objects; people, places, speeches about processes; speeches about events; or speeches about concepts and ideas. Check your notes and the chapter on informative speeches. Please see the handout on Organizing Your Informative Speeches.
Speech point value: 100 points. You will be graded for both content and delivery. See grading sheet criteria.
Speech formats: It must be typed in formal full-sentence outline format. Your full sentence outline is your speech. Please follow the model. You will bring your full sentence outline to the podium. However, you must rehearse because you cannot read it. We will practice. Please see the Model Informative Speech handout.
Eye Contact: You may mark up the speech in any way to represent rate, pitch, volume, or stress. Please mark slashes (//) for breath pauses. One slash (/) represents a slight pause; (//) two slashes represents a longer pause; and (///) three slashes represent the longest pause. Please underline one stress word within each breath pause.
REMEMBER to look down; don’t speak; memorize the breath phrase, which is a thought; look up; and tell an audience member the thought emphasizing with your voice the stress word you underlined. YOU MUST REHEARSE AT HOME.
If the speech is totally read, then you will only get half credit.
Requirements:
Research will be required for this speech, even if you consider yourself well-versed on the topic! Time = 3-5 minutes, exactly, (i.e. going over or under the time will result in a deduction from your earned points);
A two (2) page outline plus bibliography is required (see the model speech); dress as appropriate for your speech topic;
No ball caps are allowed;
Organization is of the utmost importance on this speech. You not only need an identifiable introduction (with a central idea/thesis), body and conclusion, but also the proper components as discussed in class and illustrated in the model outline, as well as your textbook;
Your main points need to be developed and supported, so you will need to provide source citations. At least three (3) outside sources are required. DO NOT cite a WEBSITE as www.citation.com. A bibliography must accompany your outline. The bibliography must conform to the APA guidelines;
If you do not cite (speak) your sources in your speech, OR you do not cite your sources in the outline, OR you do not submit a bibliography with your outline, you will receive a zero (0) for this speech;
Audience adaptation is also very important in an informative speech. You are trying to convey information that not only you find interesting, but also that your audience will find interesting as well. You will be expected to hone your ability to interpret nonverbal feedback from the audience;
Speech evaluations: You will be expected to evaluate members of the class.
Sample Outline for an Informative Speech (use this outline)
INTRODUCTION:
General Purpose: To inform
(When we build an informative speech, it is to explain or discuss or describe. The general purpose is to convey knowledge so that your audience can understand the knowledge that you are presenting in an interesting way.)
Specific Purpose: To explain to my audience about how to stay healthy.
Attention-getter: (Tell a story; use a quotation; arouse curiosity; use a visual aid; state a statistic; see the chapter on introductions & conclusions.)
Establish Credibility: (Make sure you include talking about yourself in relationship to the topic. You need to talk about your authority to speak on the subject. You must also include drawing the audience into why this topic may be interesting to them. Using the words “you” and “I” are important to establish a relationship.)
Central Idea or Thesis Statement: Staying healthy requires a proper diet, vitamins, and exercise.
(In this thesis, I “previewed what the 3 main points of my speech are.” A thesis/preview makes it easy for the audience to hear exactly what you will be speaking about. In fact, they will automatically write down the 3 points. Your job is to fill out those 3 main points during the speech.)
Transition Statement: Let me begin with a proper diet.
