Title

Even on the first day of the orientation in Berkeley, I was told to stay away from People’s park which locates on Telegraph Avenue for some safety reasons. It is a place that has been overrun by homeless people, and the only thing recreational about this place isthe drug. As a dorm resident of Unit 2 which is just a block away from People’s park, I have to pass there everyday. During daytime, it almost looks like a cheerful place, with a mixture of people in sleeping bags, a couple of dogs running around, residents fraternizing in small groups... and there's even a basketball court. However, I'm sure it becomes a different place at night and the safety goes down immeasurably. I haven't heard of any violent crime happening here but I would caution all to stay away after dark to be safe.Whenever I have to go back to the dorm at night, I will let me friend to drive me home in order to avoid unnecessary danger. Students like me who reside nearby the park are in constant competition for use of the space, but since this is liberal Berkeley, this park will most likely be allowed to remain as it is. Although my previous impression of this park is only crime and violence, I have found its unique beauty after once been there at night. As long as we open our blinded eyes, we will seek the noisy in peace.

One day before my midterm, I was back from the library at 1am. My friend who can drive me back was sick so I have to call the “Bear Walk” security for help. Due to the high demand at midnight, they arranged a staff to walk with me instead of driving me back. Even though there was someone stay with me, I was still freaking scared as I passed the park. The homeless people have filled up the sidewalks across from the park and taking over the walkways in front of the adjacent student apartments. Afraid of being noticed and focused, I shifted my eyes to the surroundings. The stars were extremely shiny since there was no building blocked the vision. The homeless peopledidn't stop doing what they were doing before as strangers passed by. I was not that afraid and pay more attention to them. From the dark patches of plant life, lay a man who's been there before. Behind the trees that had beheld the slaughter of men who dreams behind a picket line. Beneath the dirt, is the sweat stained earth of those who fought for her freedom. I saw a man who sang with a guitar to his girlfriend; I saw two stray dogs leaning to their owner; I saw a group of friends sit together chatting happily; I saw a women gave more than half of a burger to an old man. It seems like every one won’t be left alone. They enjoy their own life there, a world that cannot be understand by most of normal people.“Hi, young girl. How’s going?” A black man with friendly smile asked me. “Pretty nice, thank you!” I turned to look back repeatedly at every step. I saw a man who covered his body with blankets to stave off the chill of recent winter nights. He might be someone who, due to some bad choices, bad circumstances or bad genetics - or all three - is struggling to get through life the best they can.  It's easy to dismiss these people, until you look just a little deeper.

I changed my point of view to the People’s park completely from that day. Although someone who have a prejudice against homeless people may argue that I did not discover the dark side of that place like drugs and violence, I would say that parks should be for everyone to enjoy and the majority of the people there are harmless. People’s park seems like one of the last places in Berkeley that “People can be people”. Those homeless people with freedom have the right to do everything except those illegal things there and it is their home. Most people can only look the upper surface of everything, but if we open up our eyes, so does our kind heart, we will seek the most beautiful views of the world.
