1. What would be the impact of having digital educational records for all students (similar to the idea of electronic health records)? Do you see any major drawbacks to the technology?

Having digital educational records for all students would have positive impacts as it would help consume less paper and would promote green technology. Since everything would be digital, accessing records would be really easy and instant which helps save time. The only drawback I could think of would be the confidentiality of the records. Going digital means it is more prone to being hacked and records used for improper use. However, with advanced technology and firewalls, this drawback can be tackled. Therefore, I only see positive impacts for having digital records of all students with minimal drawbacks.

 

2. What are some major tips for “Going Green” from a Green IT perspective?

From Green IT perspective, going green can be achieved by encouraging recycling, and the use of less harmful materials in the production of IT materials, and also use of renewable energies.

Major tips for going green from a Green IT perspective would be encouraging recycling to the max. Recycling is one of the best ways to go green and by recycling products green IT can be achieved. Similarly, using renewable energies and using raw materials that be reused can also aid towards a sustainable green IT. Likewise, other tips can include using power management features that helps conserve energy, minimizing the use of plastic and paper and maximizing the use electronic documents. On that note using of less harmful products while producing IT would help significantly to go green.

 

3. How can pattern analysis and other collected data be helpful in crime prevention and response?

Pattern analysis and other data is vital in ensuring that current crime events are revealed. It provides ways in which the new trends can be dealt with.

Pattern analysis and other collected data can be helpful in crime prevention and response as it gives you readings of crime and disorder problems in specific locations with the help of a systematic study. With the help of pattern analysis, crimes with similar patterns are predicted and would alert the law enforcements to reach the crime scene pre hand or right on time. This would also help the police to gain more evidence, which would further aid to prevent such crimes in the future.

4.Discus some major privacy issues related to smart city public safety and surveillance.

Some of the major privacy issues in a smart city are need for privacy in private property and desire to have personal space.

So for example all these surveillance cameras around us, they are there to protect us but in the same time they are taking our privacy away from us. You are seen in the streets driving or walking, in the ATM withdrawing money, and in the stores shopping around.

 

5. How are the concepts of Big Data and Smart Cities related?

Smart cities leverage big data as a way of making improvement in infrastructure and other services like management and sustainability. Big data is really helpful for so many aspects. In particular, smart cities are working to overcome the challenges of big data in cities by reducing environmental problems.

Many cites do not need more housing; what they need is better housing and better urban environments. What we need is to use our ingenuity to optimize physical and financial resources. There are major opportunities that could benefit society as a whole if we can successfully interpret big data

 

6. Discuss the benefits of having “green buildings” (aka LEED certified)  and creating green spaces in terms of creating smarter cities.

Having green buildings promotes energy conservation, and enhances safe healthy environments. Also, it reduces environmental problems. Also, it ensures that workers enjoy the working environment and thus increasing their performances.

Some of the initiatives that employ smarter city are Masadar in United Emirates, Copenhagen, and Gothenburg, and St Davids.

 

8. Will information literacy be more important as more information is digitized?

Digitization of information will encourage literacy because the information can be accessed at any given time. Also, one can retrieve information and convert to other media like printing.

 

9. What are some major causes for pollution and e-waste for cities and businesses?

Lack of recycling and use of non-renewable sources of information are the chief causes of e-waste pollution in cities and also business. Finally, the use of harmful materials for IT equipments promotes pollution.
