Data Flow Diagram
Draw a context level and a Parent level data flow diagram for the following:
Vinny Vitale’s Vista Video Store
Vista Video, is a throw-back, retro style video store for people who do not wish to use Netflix. It purchases tapes and DVD’s from a “new” vendor and rents them out to customers. It also sells new tapes and DVD’s to customers and used tapes (excess stock) to a “used” vendor who deals in used tapes. Vista also wishes to capture customer information (both current customers and neighborhood prospects) and wants to track usage and trends.
The General Ledger, Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable and Payroll functions have been taken care of by the purchase of an accounting software package.
In a recent conversation with Alice the Analyst, Vinny Vitale did mention several fields of data that he thought the system should have. They were:
Product ID, Product Type, Title, Movie Rating, Rental Fee, Sale price, Rentals YTD, Sales YTD
Customer last name, Customer First Name, Customer Number, Cust Street Address, Cust City, Cust State, Cust Zip, Cust Phone Number, Cust e-mail address, Cust Rentals YTD, Cust sales YTD, Cust YTD late fees
Vendor for Purchases as well as the Vendor for Sales of used products - Last Name, First Name, vendor Number,
Prospect Last name, First Name, Street address, city, state, zip.
Inventory - for each product - number originally purchased, sold and on hand.
Transactions - rental/sale date, customer number, fee, type of transaction, rental out date, rental return due date, actual return date, late fee.
The parent level processes are:
- Store purchases of tapes & DVDs from the ‘New” vendor
- Rentals to customers
- Sales of used tapes and DVDs to customers
- Sales of used material to the “Used” vendor
- Capture of Custer and Prospects information
- Track usage & trends
There are seven data stores.
