Some people are surprised to learn that you CAN face more

Some people are surprised to learn that you CAN face more than one trial for the same criminal act. Depending on the crime, you could face Federal AND State charges, and maybe even be sued civilly for any damages (so three trials). What is your reaction to this? Does it violate the spirit of double jeopardy? Is it a waste of resources? Is it justice? What are your thoughts on this practice? Be sure to include specifics and sources where appropriate.
