Summaries* are used for longer passages; they provide a concise, holistic overview of the source's meaning, using new and unique phrasing. The purpose of summaries is to provide basic context of a source but not to go into explicit detail.

Answer the following question by typing your response in the textbox provided and click "Submit" to save your response to the Notebook, which can be found under the "Course Tools" menu. You will also download your response to a Word document by following the directions at the bottom of this page. This document must be submitted in Blackboard, and you should check it for errors and formatting prior to submission.

As you work on your summary, remember to refer to the assignment guidelines and rubric (click here) to make sure you're fulfilling each aspect of the assignment. You can also download/print the rubric.

 

The next activity uses a rich text area. You can tab to the editor body. Press ALT-F10 to get to the toolbar. Press ESC to return to the editor body. A save button is available in the top toolbar all the way to the right and will become visible when it receives focus.

In your summary, you should paraphrase the article without including direct quotes. However, you should also include at least one in-text citation since the ideas are not original.
