You are walking down Forbes Avenue when you hear a bank alarm go off. You look toward the sound and see a man running out of the bank with a ski mask on, a Mellon Bank cash bag in one hand, and a revolver in the other. You notice that as he runs down the block, a book (Creative Retirement Planning for the Daring, by Rob N. Steele) drops out of his pocket. The man runs into a car and drives off.
May you lawfully pick up and keep the book and not deliver it to the police who you know are looking for it?
Â
a. | Yes- "finders keepers...losers ..." |
b. | No. If you pick up the book, you must report to the police what and where you found it or run the risk of being prosecuted for obstruction of justice or hindering the investigation. |
c. | Yes, as you are under no obligation to aid the police. |
d. | No. You have a positive legal obligation to recover the book or notify the police of its location. |
e. | Yes, unless the police specifically ask you for it. |
