Over the past few decades there has been quite a lot of debate about the reliance on violence risk assessment for both sentencing and prison parole/release purposes. After reading chapter 5 in your text, conduct some additional research to further explore this practice. In a two page  discuss the following:

  • Compare and contrast the different methods of assessment - clinical, actuarial, structural professional judgment.
  • If you were a practicing forensic psychologist which of these, or combination of these would you use? Why do you think this is the best strategy?
  • How reliable is violence risk assessment?
  • Why do many in the field have a problem using this type of assessment when making sentencing and/or release decisions for offenders
  • Criminal Profiling Many people are drawn to the field of forensic psychology with dreams of being a criminal profiler just
    like the ones they see on their favorite TV show or movie. Conduct an internet search to discover the
    realities of criminal profiling. In a 1-2 page paper make sure to cover the following:
    •What is criminal profiling?
    •What training and background does a person need in order to be a competent profiler?
    •Is there any science behind the art of profiling?
    •What controversies surround the use of criminal profiling?
