OPINION-BASED ESSAY ASSIGNMENT
PURPOSE: The purpose of the opinion-based essay assignment is for students to choose a topic we’ve studied in family law and write a paper that examines that topic and presents a strong opinion on that topic. This opinion should be expressed as a fact, though, in the form of a thesis: a statement that presents an argument for which the rest of the paper seeks to prove.
For example: Because divorce terminates the marital relationship, the law should not recognize any continuing obligations to a former marital partner, specifically alimony.
REQUIREMENTS: The paper should be 3-5 pages in length and should follow MLA formatting guidelines. A minimum of 3 sources should be used (quoted and cited).
RESOURCES: I highly recommend using the OWL at Purdue website for help with MLA formatting and citations and with research tips in general.
I NEED THIS INFORMATION BELOW SEPARATELY FROM THE FINAL PAPER!
- I NEED THE TOPIC
- I NEED THE SOURCES (AT LEAST 3) IN MLA FORMAT
- I NEED AN OUTLINE (outline can be formal or informal but please give enough information that I can tell you’re headed in the right direction)
- I NEED A ROUGH DRAFT
