  1. 1. In the notes, the structure of the opening four chapters, which really do not focus on Douglass at all. What is the effect of these on the broader narrative? Why does he delay his own story until Chapter 5?
  2. 2. Though Douglass does not speak much of family in the narrative, Chapter 8 devotes some of the most poetic language in the narrative to the death of his grandmother. Why does Douglass highlight this loss in this way? Is it a window into his deeply felt personal loss, or is he doing something more rhetorical here?
  3. 3. What is the role of isolation in the text? Douglass mentions being alone or isolated several times throughout the narrative, even after he is free. Is this simply an honest depiction of his circumstance, or does it serve a larger purpose.
