This assignment serves as the research component for the HS 2230 Survey of Human Services course.

Instructions:

The field of human services is broad and complex. During the term, you have completed a number of self-assessments designed to enlighten you about your thoughts, orientations, values, and views on a number of areas related to the field of Human Services.

Using the information from the self-assessment assignments and other information gained thus far in this course; write a paper that describes your personal assessment of "goodness of fit" for the profession of human services. Address the following items in your submission:

1)     Provide a statement for why you are interested in the field of Human Services. For maximum points, provide an example of a time when you provided help or assistance to someone in need.

2)     Describe the personality characteristics you currently possess that will make you a successful human service professional (hint: use your self-assessments to make your point!); describe the characteristics you are in need of developing.

3)     Describe the skills you currently possess that will make you a successful human service professional (hint: use your self-assessments to make your point!); describe the skills you are in need of developing and/or improving.

4)     Make sure you reference EACH self-assessment as you discuss the "goodness of fit" for the helping profession.

 

Format instructions:

Provide an APA Format Title page; include your name, university name, date, and title of the paper. 

Double space, indent 1^st sentence of each paragraph, 1" margins (top, bottom, left, and right).

The paper must reference each of the 5 self-assessment tools you took previously (include a parenthetical reference or a reference to the assessment within the paragraph for each self-assessment tool). For this paper, you are NOT required to have a reference page.

You are allowed to write in the first person on this assignment.

My interest in the field of human services developed from my experiences in helping other people in need.   Specifically, I was able to teach other parents of young children with complex disabilities how to speak up for themselves and the services their child and family needed to be independent, productive and included in the community. Seeing other people find their self-confidence and voice to advocate for themselves provided me a sense of personal accomplishment. 

 I believe I have the characteristics of acceptance, genuineness, cross-cultural sensitivity, and empathy. The assessing the 8 characteristics self-assessment demonstrated I felt these were important skills for a human service professional and I am able to demonstrate the skill by being myself, seeing other people's points of views, accepting other people for who they are and not judging them, and being aware of cultural diversity and aspects of other culture beliefs, views, and values.  A characteristic in need of improvement is wellness.  

The adult developmental level self-assessment showed me I sometimes do not listen well to other people and I do not always seek out enough information when trying to answer complex questions. I found that I do rely on other people to help me make important decisions and could improve my skill of gathering information from a variety of sources to help me make my own decisions. I did find that I believe I can change the world and am open to exploring and developing my personal values and beliefs further. This information shows me I continue to seek out information which reflects the human service professional characteristic of competence.
