Abstract
Purpose of the paper has been to provide the social psychological evaluation of gun control debate in between US. Research had been done for discovering what the social psychological theories have been at play like people take the stance on either part of debate, like formation of the attitudes to guns, potential behavioral effects of the guns along with rest of the psychological phenomena that can affect formation of newer gun control policies.
This had been found that individuals who have been in favor of the gun control usually develop the negative attitudes to firearms due to their behavioral effects, like increments in the aggression or through the availability heuristic by absorbing the abundance of the statistical data that depicts the gun control like the potential reducer of the violent behavior.
On rest of the side of debate, opponents of the gun control in between scope of the social cognition have usually individualists who see firearms being part of its social as well as cultural identities that they do not wish to surrender. This had been found that in event, which newer or modified gun control policies have been deemed compulsory through greater society, those changes in the law can be hindered through the groupthink in between the legislative bodies.
This has been feasible that just exposure effect can associate to how individuals within the society feel of guns. Just exposure effect guides that the repeated exposure to the object may increment our tendency for associating that object towards positive feelings (Crisp, 2010). It seems to be the scenario, like several individuals in between the society hold guns within quite higher regard in which they have been seen like symbols of the Americanism as well as even being sacred objects (Lifton, 1999).
