INSTRUCTIONS

Since the terror attacks on September 11, 2001, terrorism has captured the attention of all law enforcement and security agencies in the United States. However, those attacks were not the first terrorist attacks that killed Americans. In this section, you will explore a variety of issues related to terrorism and law enforcement, along with the international impact brought on by terrorist groups.

 

After completing the readings and ASSIGNMENTS in this section you should be able to do the following:

2. Investigate the threat of terrorism and weapons of mass destruction, and the U.S. response.

3. Discuss the need for cooperative efforts among law enforcement and other stakeholders in responding to major law enforcement issues.

Introduction:

Terrorism in NORTH AMERICA and Action Taken by the United States

Terrorism in North America is a major concern for law enforcement officials in the United States. As the global war on terrorism continues, local communities are discovering that funding for enforcement is being cut. This creates management challenges for CRIMINAL justice leaders that must still protect the public from acts of terrorism. Reflect on the types of acts that may be encountered, and how law enforcement agencies can respond to them. Incorporate some of the lessons learned from the 9/11 Commission specifically as it relates to interagency partnerships.

This week you are to prepare a paper to answer the following questions:

• What is terrorism?
• Has the frequency of terrorism increased over the last several years or is this a perception based on media reports?
• If terrorism is taking place at a higher or lower frequency today, what do you believe at are some of its major causes?
• What in your opinion do you believe should be done to help reduce terrorism in the United States?
• What impact has terrorism had on the United States, whether attacks are domestic or elsewhere?

In your analysis, assess the relationships among law enforcement agencies. Evaluate the use of weapons of mass destruction and analyze the actions of public safety and health agencies.

Support your paper with at least 3 scholarly or PROFESSIONAL sources. In addition to these specified resources, other appropriate scholarly resources, including older articles, may be included.

Length: 5-7 pages not including title and reference pages
