HW Chapter 8: Sleep and Biological Rhythms

HW Chapter 8: Sleep and Biological Rhythms
Name:__________________________________________
ENERGY CONSERVATION THEORY
Fast-moving animals with high metabolic rates sleep more than those that burn calories more slowly,
thereby conserving their energy.
Given the table of animal steep durations, do you find any support for the Energy Conservation Theory?
Consider in particular the following questions:
A. Compare animals that are similar is size and activity. Do they seem to need the same amount
of sleep?
B. Compare human beings at different ages. How might age play a part in energy needs and
sleep?
C. Compare small animals with large animals. Do larger animals need to rest more to conserve
energy?
D. Compare animals that are herbivores (plant eaters) with those that are carnivores (meat
eaters) or omnivores (anything eaters). Meat is a more concentrated food. Can carnivores
sleep more? Species
