The three scenarios presented below are designed make you think of all the questions that need to be answered and additional pieces of information that need to be collected to respond wisely to these scenarios.Â
1.You are finishing up some paperwork at the end of a hard day. As the HR manager, you have been involved in the company's labor negotiations with the union regarding the truck drivers' new contract. The negotiations have not been going well, and all signs indicate that a strike will be called in a matter of days. As you are leaving, three drivers, all long-term employees, ask to have a word with you in private. They inform you that they are not happy with their union and that a number of the other drivers feel the same way. 2.They ask you to help them get rid of the union.Â
You have been interviewing an applicant for a production line opening. The applicant seems to have all the necessary KSAs to do the job, and you feel like he will be one of the three candidates you call back in for a second interview. As you are about to close the interview, he informs you that, if hired, he intends to encourage his co-workers to form a union.
3. You are the store manager for a regional supermarket chain. Your store is nonunion. When a local union attempts to organize your employees, you receive orders to terminate those employees who have signed union authorization cards. Your regional manager also orders you to prepare termination slips for each of the fired employees detailing false reasons for their termination.
