BUS 153 – Memorandum Composition
— Format: Open to your preference BUT it needs to have a professional memo style heading and format of the body. You are writing a memo to your professor of Human Resources Management with the goal of educating on the topic you picked and clearly explaining the ramifications of the trend. *This should be typed in a WORD type of document, not in PowerPoint. **
— First section: Identify the context for the memo - what is the context related to and what is the reason (issue) giving rise to the memo. Be clear and concise. When the reader finishes the first section / paragraph, they know what you are going to address and what the potential issue / problem is within the memo
— Second section: Clearly identify all the facts, both supportive and contrary, to the reason for the memo. This should be factual and agreed upon by reasonable people and supported by references as needed. Be sure to identify all facts whether they support your position or not. At the end of this section the reader should have an understanding of the context of the situation and the facts.
— If references to outside sources are used, please add a separate reference page. Please do NOT use outside information without a reference, or points will be deducted.
— Third section: Discuss the problem and issue with complete thoughts and make sure you present a balanced approach. At the end of this section, the reader should understand the problem/issue and all the possible alternatives and potential problems.
— Fourth section: Make your recommendations including specific actions, more research, and/or additional questions. At the end of this section, the reader should have a clear understanding how you want to proceed.
— Fifth Section: Close by asking for agreement to take action or proceed as appropriate.
— Please note: If you do not follow this approach, points may be taken off unless you come up with a better approach and getting approval by the professor before turning it in.

You are to pick ONE of the following trends in human resources and discuss the ramifications on the Human Resource function for a large company. You are to consider:
·        Workforce Planning
·        Employment laws
·        Recruiting
·        Selection
·        Compensation & Benefits
·        Training & Development
·        Performance Management
·        Employee Relations
Use the provided memorandum template for your report.
Suggested Topics:
1.     Employment & Outsourcing - As companies in the US and Britain cut software jobs and outsource to other countries in order to drive down costs, countries such as India continue to see employment rise.
2.     Culture & Collectivism In Taiwan, a country that is high in collectivism, co-workers consider themselves more as group members instead of individuals.
3.     Working Abroad - Qualities associated with success in foreign assignments are the ability to communicate in the foreign country, flexibility, enjoying challenging situations and support from family members.
4.     Performance Work Systems - In a High-performance work system, all the elements – people, technology, and organizational structure – work together for success.
5.     Benefits. You are the Benefits manager – how do you pick the best program for your company? The company is >1000 employees. What should the total benefits package look like? Make sure to take cost into effect; you cannot give every benefit there is to every person (you will run out of money quickly!) Who should get which benefits? What are the challenges and opportunities?
6.     Training doesn’t matter. As the training manager, you are asked to develop a training program. Your manager’s manager does not think training is important to your company. What kind of company do you work for (you may pick a specific one, but it has to be >1000 people)? Does training matter? What programs should you offer and why?
