Subject:
The P.T.A is the most power organization ran in a school. You need them functional in order to move forward with school activities. The PTA offers a variety of programs designed for parents as well as students. Tap into a Network. PTA functions are opportunities to meet other parents and teachers, building rapport and discussing issues that are on your mind. You can share ideas, concerns, and experiences. With times changing we have to use technology to reach out to these parents.
Business Problem: Â
How to handle nonproductive team members and introduce technology into the mix? Can be easy to forget about boundaries? When does it become nonproductive? When it goes sour, people need to split up and transfer because it will hinder work place. One way to try and improve team is recognizing the problem and tries to pull everyone back together. Schedule a meeting to discuss what the problem is and try to see if we can work something out maybe it’s a scheduling issue maybe it’s a personal issue.  The discussion may reveal broader issues within the team that should be corrected. Conversely it may lead to a recognition that the team members are not likely to deliver the needed performance, in which case the president must proceed with corrective action. And it doesn't have to be contentious. (Kasl, C.D., 1995) While issue is in process to resolve after successful identification of root cause, ask other members to communicate with him/her frequently face to face. When it is discovered that team members are not performing intentionally then some time micromanagement may be required. In some cases, the non performing team member may be paired with highly performing team member. Needs: to be good, understood, appreciated, receive acceptance wants: to reveal insecurities, please others, autonomy, security, goal setter. Strength: disciplined, receptive, plans well, intuitive. Limitations: sets unrealistic goals, easily discouraged, frustrated with lack of team cooperation, expects others to understand, too rigid. Care should be taken that nonproductive team member should not become parasite to the performing one. We must keep moving forward. In order to keep the P.T.A running if the member. (Townsend, H., 1994)
Name of the Organization and background:
The organization that my research will be based on the P.T.A at The New American Academy at P.S. 274 located in The Bronx, New York. This charter school was created by Shimon Waronker who was a public school teacher first then principal in the public school system for many years. The first school where he became the headmaster was in Brooklyn, NY. He was known for restructuring failing schools and bringing them back to life. That’s why he created a whole new structure for the school in the Bronx. This was an old school called P.S 230 first which faded out (That’s what the board of education call schools that are about to be taken over by a charter school) had the old school structure but also was a failing school for years. He had a dream and he wanted to put it into action. Parents was against the new structure not knowing that the old way would leave their children in a no win state of mind. So the board of education opens the door for him to start and open the parent’s eyes to something new. In the process of this the P.T.A (Parent Teachers Association) is formed which is the middle men. This is an organization that is created to keep the communication between the parents and teachers open and leveled at all times. The P.T.A holds meetings every month regarding issues that are on hand, and fundraisers. We deal with the parents head on and try our best to help the community and stand up to the board of education for what is right and wrong. We are the parents advocates the voices that they need to stand in their corner when needed like a lawyer. We try to keep the peace amongst the community so that there aren’t no hard feeling on both ends. Basically they try to unify the community. We let it be known what the needs are and make the board of education stand strongly by them especially if they want to have a lucrative P.T.A up and running.
My role:
On the P.T.A I am the President (Leader) I guide everyone in the role and responsibilities that they need to take part in. I plan all meetings, events, communication amongst teachers and parents. I make sure the ball keeps rolling. I also control the funds coming in and out of the organization I am the heart of it all. As a parent leader I work on getting as many parent volunteers as possible into the school to help out with different activities as I can. I try to listen to others ideas and plans. I encourage my team mates and try to help them develop trust and honesty in the process. When I know it a problem I put my best foot forward and try to solve the issue before it gets out of hand. I am very compassionate when it comes to the community. I love what I do because I love the kids.
Proposed Solution:
Every year an election is held in September when school start for positions. You have President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer and Title 1. The President who is reelected who is me then it is the vice who will be there just in case if I can’t then the secretary who supposed to take notes and take care of all paper work, then the treasurer who take care of the financial part then its title 1 who deal with the board of education. At this point we are at the forming stage which is the first stage where we are getting to know each other with a brief introduction for those who don’t already know each other and get well acquainted. Getting to know each other’s strengths, weaknesses, and any other information that we choose to share with each other at this point. Everyone is the leader of their own position so that parts don’t have to be chosen again. (Robbins, S.P., Judge, T.A., 2014)Then the next stage where we tend to get to is the storming stage where it the intragroup. Where everyone is at conflict gossiping/back talk and behave in uncertain matters. That’s when I step in and encourage communication and tell everyone that this is normal but at the same time we must stick to the plan which is the children. We have to earn each other’s trust and communicate in an adult matter. (Robbins, S.P., Judge, T.A., 2014)I let everyone know their role and responsibilities they agree and like a month in the team members start to disappear and everyone forget that we are a team. No one do their part. So by the second week of October all of the responsibilities is all on one person the president, and whoever else is left. Everything starts to fall apart. Hard to not compete as friends while working together. The children are left with basically half of a P.T.A and all the roles are falling on one or two people and energy levels are falling down also. Have to remember people still have outside lives so you have to be able to balance that out also. That means all scheduled duties have to be changed and roles to and put on to the people or person who is left.
Benefits to the Organization:
Using social media to increase parent involvement, using email/text alerts to let the parents know when the next P.T.A meeting or Parent Teacher Conferences or any activity going on at the school. Use QuickBooks to keep track of all funds going in and out of P.T.A funds. Technology serves as a good tool for solving business issues. With the progress of technology a lot of business problems accrue.
Audience for recommendation:Â
This proposal will first go to The Department of Education, then to the family advocate who supposed to provide all needs to parents, the principal and teachers and lastly to the parents that attend the School leadership meeting so that they can get a better understanding of what have been going on and what need to be changed.
