1.Career Development - Outside the Box
I was talking with a colleague today about Talent Management. Many companies are beginning to think outside the box in terms of the development their executives. A better term might be thinking outside the company. What do we mean by this? It is a practice that accepts that the best way to develop Jack or Jill and his or her career as an executive, might not be inside the company, but rather to send Jack off to another company to gain experience and then hire him back in three years. People coming and going happens every day, but to make it a deliberate talent management strategy is something else.

What are your thoughts - a brilliant idea, or too risky?
2. Job Rotation for Development
Another interesting topic in this chapter is job rotation - job rotation for the purpose of developing the employee (not just to cross train or for scheduling ease). The advantages that job rotation provides to an organization are numerous. Some of the advantages are a better understanding of companies goals, improved problem-solving skills, and a better understanding of company functions to name a few. Job rotation can be very important in the development of any employee for an organization, especially if the organization sees an employee they feel has long term goals with the company. On the other hand, job rotation can be hard to organize and is often better in theory than practice.
Have you ever been involved in job rotation in your organization? What do you feel are the biggest advantages of job rotation?

Career Development
This chapter explores the issues around career management and development.  I think we can all see why we, as individuals, would be interested in this topic.  But why should companies be interested in helping employees plan their careers? What benefits can companies gain? What are the risks?
Â
5. Coaching
Here is another great topic in this chapter - coaching. Think back to your Week Two papers.Â
What is the role of coaching in an effective employee development plan? Why would managers avoid coaching their employees?
Â
6. Executive Education
This chapter has many interesting topics. Training executives can be challenging. Shouldn't they already be trained?
Why do organizations provide executive training? What training methods are effective in training executives? Why are they effective?
