Assignment Instructions
Â
Purpose:
Â
The purpose of this assignment is to assess your critical thinking and writing skills to see where your strengths are and where there is room for improvement this semester. There is no need to do any research or consult any sources in order to complete this assignment; just do your best to respond thoughtfully to the question below and to express your ideas clearly.
Â
Background:
Â
Most people agree that adults should care for their parents in various ways as their parents get older; in other words, they believe that adults have duties to their parents. But there is disagreement about whether those duties are strong or weak. According to some people, adults have duties to their parents, even if they are not on friendly terms with them, whereas others believe that adults who are not on friendly terms with their parents have no duties to their parents at all.
Â
Question:
Â
Do adults who are not on friendly terms with their parents still have duties to them? Explain why or why not.
Â
Structure:
Â
Structure your response by writing three separate paragraphs. In the first, state your position on the question and describe the most persuasive reasons for holding that position. In the second paragraph, play the devil’s advocate and describe the most persuasive reasons for rejecting your view. Finally, in a third paragraph, see if you can explain why the reasons given in the second paragraph are not convincing.
