As I reviewed this week's topics and concepts I want to highlight a few points around HR's role in organizational strategy.

Strategic HR is about harnessing human potential and championing high performance. THis will look differently across organizations - --- but the key is that it will be tied to business strategy and aligned with cultural values in the process.

Some will argue (and I agree) that instead of helping and serving employees, HR should be developing, supporting, encouraging and enabling employees' capacity to deliver. This is what I mean by harnessing human potential and channeling it in the right direction -- toward the achievement of the organization's mission, vision and values. This mindset, perspective, or viewpoint is the starting point to strategic HR.

An HR function that exists to serve employees might as well be a social service, or benefits and aid organization, in contrast to a business. A strategic HR department will be seen as one that enables, empowers and engages employees for the purposes of the business.

Many human resource professionals are waiting to GET a seat at the table, but they need to EARN it. How? We earn a seat by being a valuable organizational asset. We do so by serving the ultimate aims of the organization. When we help our functions make this shift, we are half way to becoming a strategic partner.

You could say that the other 50% of the equation is about intepersonal effectiveness and leadership of the HR leader. Thoughts? Reactions?
