Recommended Paper Format:
A. Introduction or Background
B. Topic Development –
use subheadings to organize and divide the paper into logical sections
C. Conclusions or Recommendations –
these should be supported by evidence from the paper
D. References (from professional sources, properly cited)
E. Appendix (optional) - charts, tables, supplementary materials
Paper Evaluation: Papers will be assessed on the basis of
1. Research Techniques/Evidence of Effort (25 points)
2. Topic Development (110 points)
3. Format, Organization, Writing Style, Mechanics
(sentence structure, grammar, spelling, punctuation) (15 points)
Papers are worth up to 150 points. You will be expected to produce a well-researched and well-written paper. I will expect you to properly cite your references and quote any specific sources used. Your sources might include academic journals, professional magazines, other printed periodicals, books (i.e. your text!!), or possibly the Internet. For examples of acceptable sources, see the End notes in your text.
Note on references/sources from the Internet:
Do not, I repeat, DO NOT limit your sources to Google searches. While the Internet can provide quick access to loads of information, not all of what you’ll find is considered reliable. For those sources you do take from the Internet, be sure to include the author’s name and the date the material was published in your source citation. (If you cannot find this information, I suggest the material may not be credible!) Students who nonetheless limit their research to internet-based sources will diminish their score by at least one letter grade. If in doubt, ask me to approve your sources.
When I grade papers, I am favorably influenced by any trace of original thought! Include personal opinion in your paper in addition to research. Personalize it! Consider this a requirement of the paper.
Estimated length of paper: 10-15 pages of text
(References and a Table of Contents are in addition to the 10-15 estimated pages. By the way, References and a Table of Contents are required components of your paper!!)
Topic Selection:
Choose a topic that will be covered in class and is interesting or intriguing to YOU. Research and develop your understanding of that topic and how it has or will influence your working life.
You must have my approval of your paper BEFORE writing and turning it in. Propose, in writing, your choice of topic by March 24th. You may propose a topic earlier than this if you wish. You will receive feedback from me so that you may proceed.
The finished paper is due April 21st.
